What the policy covers

  1. 1. POLICY STATEMENT
    Driving for work is one of the highest risk activities carried out by many employees.
  2. 3. VEHICLE ROADWORTHINESS
    Company vehicles will be maintained in a roadworthy condition by your company.
  3. 4. MOBILE PHONES
    Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is illegal and carries a minimum fixed penalty of £200 and 6 points.
  4. 5. FATIGUE AND FITNESS TO DRIVE
    Employees must not drive if they are too tired, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or taking medication that impairs driving ability.
  5. 6. ACCIDENTS AND INCIDENTS
    All road traffic accidents involving a company vehicle or occurring during company business must be reported to … immediately, regardless of fault or severity.
  6. 7. REVIEW
    This policy will be reviewed annually and following any significant road traffic incident.

Is a driving at work policy a legal requirement?

It rests on Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and Road Traffic Act 1988 and Highway Code. Some policies must be written down once a business reaches a certain size or does certain work; others are simply how a tribunal, an inspector or a client's auditor expects to see that you have thought about it.
